Starting January 25, people will have to wear FFP2 masks in shops and public transport. But how much will they cost in the supermarket?

The “hard” lockdown in Austria will remain in force until February 8 due to the still too high infection numbers and the spread of the British coronavirus variant B117. In order to be able to contain the spread of the virus in the country further and to be able to sink the Corona numbers, the government sets thereby also on the FFP2 mask!

From January 25, exactly one week from now, all customers and employees in the retail sector will have to wear an FFP2 mask. Also in the public means of transport the carrying of such a mask will be obligatory starting from this date for all passengers.

Now, of course, many people are asking the question, “How much will these FFP2 masks cost in the supermarket?” Because not everyone already has an FFP2 mask at home and will have to get one first. The actual retail prices are still open. This was confirmed by representatives of Spar, Lidl, Hofer and Rewe to APA on Sunday.

Handelsobmann Rainer Trefelik of the Chamber of Commerce nevertheless ventures a forecast and assumes in the Ö1-Morgenjournal that they will be available for a maximum of one euro. Trefelik expects a price between 50 cents and one euro.

Many retail chains already have the FFP2 masks in their assortment, but these are currently still offered for sale at a much higher price. That could change however soon. Because a spokeswoman of Rewe (Billa, Merkur, Penny) stressed opposite the APA that the masks are offered “as favorably as possible”.

Lidl, for example, had already placed an FFP2 mask order in the double-digit millions. “By the end of next week, we should be able to offer one million masks,” the discounter’s spokesman told APA. Hofer is also still in the process of ordering the masks.

“They will be available to our customers at cost price in our stores. How high this will be, is not yet determined at the current time. We are trying to obtain sufficient FFP2 masks and will also order subsequent deliveries if necessary,” Hofer told APA.

According to the government, those on low incomes will receive the necessary FFP2 masks free of charge. The exact distribution will be clarified in the next few days in the Ministry of Health, according to a report.
